Arkema is a leading specialty chemicals and advanced materials company headquartered in Colombes, France. The plant in Axis near Mobile makes heat stabilizers to slow color development and extend product life of polymers. The plant also manufactures impact modifiers to increase the strength of polymers. The chemicals produced in the Alabama plant are used in essential everyday items, including hair dryers, plastic plumbing piping, vinyl siding, window frames, gutters and plastic bottles. Customers include Dow, Nalco, Certainteed, Polyone and Georgia Gulf.
In 2018, the company announced plans to expand the footprint of the Axis plant to support the production of a new polymer, a key ingredient used to make plastics. The new product will be used in carbon fiber composites and 3D printing. The company also plans to double its production capacity by building a “worldscale” poly-ether-ketone-ketone, or PEKK, facility in Mobile County.
In addition, Arkema operates the organotin manufacturing process for third party companies.
