AM/NS is a 50/50 joint venture between ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corp. (NSSMC). The partnership acquired ThyssenKrupp AG’s steel rolling mill in Calvert, Al., about 35 miles north of Mobile, for $1.5 billion in November 2013. The plant has served the NAFTA market since 2010 and processes 5.3 tons of flat-rolled carbon steel products annually. AM/NS Calvert also helps ArcelorMittal to meet increasing OEM demand for advanced high strength steels needed to produce light-weight, fuel efficient vehicles.
The facility features a river terminal, hot strip mill, cold rolling mill, three dip galvanizing lines, a rail yard, and supporting infrastructure. AM/NS’s suite of steel grades for high-value applications include hot rolled bands, hot rolled pickled and oiled, cold rolled, and advanced coated products. These serve the automotive, construction, pipe and tube, service center, and appliance industries.
